How Can I Merge iTunes Libraries From Two Computers?

You can merge the iTunes libraries of two or more different computers. Storing all of your music on one computer will allow you to synchronize it onto an MP3 player, such as the iPod, which is usually used with iTunes. iTunes has built-in features such as library consolidation, which copies all of the music in your Library to the iTunes media folder, to aid you in this process.

Things You'll Need

  • Portable hard drive
  • Click "Start," "All Programs," "iTunes" and "iTunes" to open the program. Do this on the secondary computer or the one that you want to copy the library off of to use on the other computer with iTunes.

  • Click "Advanced" and "Deauthorize Audible Account" if you will not be using iTunes on it anymore after merging the libraries. Otherwise, skip this step. Enter your account information and click "OK." This is important, because music purchased with an iTunes account can only be played back on five different authorized computers.

  • Click the "Music" tab on the upper left of the window. Click one of the songs in the library. Press "Ctrl" and "A" to select all of the songs.

  • Right-click the highlighted songs, and click "Consolidate Files." Click "Consolidate" in the window that opens. This will copy all of the music files in your library to the iTunes library folder in case it is not already stored there.

  • Attach your portable hard drive to your computer, and power it on. Click "Start" and "Music." Double-click "iTunes" and "iTunes Media."

  • Right-click "Music" and click "Copy." Click "Start," "Computer" and right-click the name of your portable hard drive in the list of drives. Click "Paste." Wait for the music to be copied to the hard drive. The progress will be shown on-screen.

  • Shut off and detach the portable hard drive from your computer. Attach it to the other computer, and power it on again.

  • Click "Start," "All Programs," "iTunes" and "iTunes." Click "Edit" on the menu bar at the top of the window, and click "Preferences." Make sure the box to the left of "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library" is checked and click "OK."

  • Click "File" and "Add Folder to Library." Click "Computer" on the left of the "Add to Library" window that opened. Double-click the name of the portable hard drive and click "Music."

  • Click "Select Folder." Once the music has been copied to the iTunes library, you can delete it off of your portable hard drive as well as the other computer if you no longer will be using it there.
