Troubleshooting a Whirlpool Freezer

Whirlpool freezers are available in upright or chest styles and offer fast freeze settings, an interior light, adjustable wire and door shelves, locking feature, temperature monitor system, storage baskets and frost-free temperature control. Many Whirlpool freezers are Energy Star rated as well. Available for purchase in many appliance or department stores as well as online, the freezers should be fairly straightforward to operate and maintain, but troubleshooting techniques may be useful if problems do arise.

Things You'll Need

  • Clean cloth(s)
  • Water
  • Plastic utensil
  • Connect the Whirlpool freezer to a power supply if it is not working. Reset or replace the fuse or circuit breaker as needed.

  • Turn the “Temperature Control” to the desired temperature if the freezer does not seem cold enough. Make sure the door can close firmly and keep the door shut as much as possible for more accurate temperature maintenance.

  • Turn the ice machine on (for applicable models) by turning the switch to “On” or moving the ice maker arm down to the “On” position if there is no ice produced. Wait at least 24 hours for the first batch of ice to be made. Remove blockages from the ice dispenser with a plastic utensil.

  • Move items away from the vent locations inside the freezer if the temperature does not stay cold enough and the thermostat is set to a cold temperature. Keep the vents and grilles on the outside of the freezer clear of possible obstructions as well.

  • Turn the temperature to a warmer setting if items are too cold or ice develops inside the freezer. Keep the door shut as much as possible and allow at least 24 hours for the temperature to change.

  • Clean the freezer door gaskets with a damp cloth if the door sticks or does not stay closed.

  • Contact Whirlpool for repair assistance or information as needed.
