How to Create a Secure Anchor for a Screw in Drywall

Drywall by its very nature is less stable than wood. To secure a screw in drywall without fear that it will pull out, use a toggle bolt anchor for the screw. The toggle bolt screw anchor set will distribute the weight that the screw is attached to evenly so the drywall does not break. Toggle bolt anchor sets are available at hardware and home improvement stores. You will need a few common household tools to install a toggle bolt anchor. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Decide where on the wall you want to insert the screw. Place the tip of a Phillips screwdriver against the spot on the drywall. Hammer the screwdriver into the wall until the tip is no longer visible. Twist the screwdriver clockwise as you pull it out of the wall to slightly enlarge the hole you just made.

    • 2

Insert the toggle bolt screw through the bracket or a predrilled hole in an object --- for example, a shelf --- that is to be mounted on the drywall.

    • 3

Hold the collapsible wing with the spring facing you. Screw the toggle bolt screw one-third of the way into the hole in the center of the wing. Collapse the wing. Insert the spring end of the wing into the hole. Push the wing fully into the wall with your fingers.

    • 4

Pull back on the toggle bolt screw to force the wing to open up inside the wall. Place the tip of a Phillips screwdriver into the screw head on the toggle bolt screw. Rotate the screwdriver clockwise to drive the toggle bolt screw into the wall. Continue to tighten the screw until you feel resistance.

Tips & Warnings

  • Longer toggle bolt screws provide more stability inside a drywall than short ones do.
