The drive shaft in a Mazda Miata is used to transfer power from the transmission to the rear wheels. A faulty driveshaft will require removal to replace. A bad driveshaft can be as little as a bad fitting holding it in to the differential to a warped drive shaft which could cause the car to vibrate when operated. Removing the drive shaft will only take a few minutes once the car is raised.
Things You'll Need
- Jack stands
- Socket wrench
- Socket set
Chock the front wheels to prevent the car from rolling forward when the car is raised. Ensure the car is either in "Park" or "Reverse." This is depending on if the car is a manual or automatic transmission.
Place a jack under the rear differential and raise the car up. Place jack stands under the rear end and lower the car on to the jack stands.
Locate the back of the drive shaft. Unscrew the two bolts on the yoke where it goes in to the rear-end.
Place a drain pan under the back of the transmission. Gear oil will drain out of the transmission once the drive shaft is removed.
Pull the drive shaft out of the transmission as it will slide out. Pull the driveshaft out from under the car.
