How to Fit Roller Blinds

Roller blinds make an attractive and practical cover for windows, and you can choose from a range of fabrics, styles and designs to complement your interior decoration scheme. Roller blinds and roller shades often come in vinyl or plastic materials, making them easy to clean and maintain, particularly in kitchens and bathrooms where steam and heat can damage other fabrics. Installing roller blinds is easier and takes less time than putting up mini-blinds or drapes.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • Spirit level
  • Pencil
  • Electric drill
  • Anchors
  • Screwdriver
  • Inspect the window and decide how to mount the roller blinds. Choose an inside mount on the window frame itself or within the window recess, or an outside mount to attach the blind to the wall above the window. Ceiling mounting is another option if there isn't enough wall space for the blind between the window and ceiling.

  • Measure the window with a wooden or metal tape measure. For inside mounts, measure the width and depth of the window frame or recess. For outside mounts, measure between two points on each side of the window on the surrounding wall. Roller blinds come in a range of standardized sizes, so select the blind size that most closely fits your measurements.

  • Hold the roller blind at the top of the window in its correct hanging position. Use a spirit level to make sure the blind is straight. Draw a line with a pencil to mark the correct position for the blind's mounting brackets on the wall or window frame.

  • Place each blind mounting bracket against the pencil line, one at either end of the line. Mark the correct position for the bracket screw holes on the wall by inserting a pencil through the holes to make a dot on the wall or window frame.

  • Drill guide holes into the window frame or wall at the positions marked by the pencil dots. Use an electric drill fitted with either a masonry or wood drill bit to drill the holes. For drywall installations, push anchors into the holes to ensure a strong installation.

  • Screw the blind mounting brackets to the wall or window frame, using a screwdriver and the screws supplied with the roller blind.

  • Snap the supplied plastic inserts into the socket on each mounting bracket. Push the plastic insert until it clicks into place.

  • Guide the pin on each end of the roller blind into the plastic inserts. The pins extend and snap into the plastic inserts. Check that the roller blind unrolls and rolls up properly.

Tips & Warnings

  • Roller blinds come with masonry and wood screws. You may need to buy specialty screws for mounting blinds on metal or plastic window frames.
