How to Use Picture Lights

Lights that enhance your wall art help create a subdued mood in the room and make the artwork a focal point. Whether you create your own painting for the room or have a beloved picture or artwork that you want to highlight, using the correct size of picture light is important to show off the wall hanging. When you coordinate the finish of the picture light with the color of the picture frame, your furnishings and other decor, there will be unity in your room.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • Mounting hardware
  • Hang your picture on the wall so that it is at eye level. In a hallway, eye level is considered to be a point where a person standing can view the artwork. In a living room, eye level often means from a sitting position, but personal preference also plays a role in deciding where to place the picture.

  • Measure the width of the picture with the measuring tape, so you will know what size light to buy.

  • Purchase a picture light with a shade that is approximately half the width of the picture, for the best illumination. Choose a coordinating finish that works well with the frame or other furnishings.

  • Mount the picture light directly above the picture frame. The hardware should be included with the light fixture.
