How to Replace an Auger in an Icemaker

The auger in a refrigerator icemaker is the screw device that moves the ice cubes as it turns. The purpose of the auger is to move the ice off the evaporator and into the storage compartment for future use. The auger on a refrigerator icemaker can wear over time and with use and may eventually need to be replaced. Replacing the auger in a refrigerator icemaker requires securing the proper part for you make and model of refrigerator.

Things You'll Need

  • Auger and back cover
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • 2 standard screwdrivers
  • Pliers
  • Unplug the refrigerator's electrical cord from the wall outlet to avoid serious injury.

  • Unscrew the Phillips screw at the bottom of the ice bucket by turning it over. Take off the ice dispenser cover.

  • Remove the ice cube control linkage by unscrewing the Phillips screw that holds it in place. Move the linkage to the rear of the ice bucket and break off the tabs from the back cover using a pair of pliers.

  • Press on the locking mechanism on either side of the crushing assembly using a standard screwdriver on each side. Remove the assembly.

  • Slide the back cover off of the auger and using a standard screwdriver remove the "C" clip from the rear of the auger. Remove the auger and the ice crusher blade assembly.

  • Put the new auger in place in the same position as the old one and insert the "C" clip through the end to hold it in place.

  • Place the back cover back in position on the auger and replace the crushing mechanism by snapping it in place.

  • Reattach the ice cube control linkage by reinserting the Phillips screw and snap the new rear cover in place.

  • Screw in the screw at the bottom of the ice bucket and replace the ice dispenser cover. Turn the bucket right side up and plug the electrical cord back into the wall outlet.
