How to Make Paste Resist for Batiking

This is an ideal substitute for batiking wax.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Flour
  • Flour
  • Bowls Or Large Measuring Cup
  • Colanders Or Strainer
  • Wire Whisks
  • Squeeze Bottles
  • Flour
  1. Step 1

    Mix 1 c. and 3 tbsp. flour in 1 c. water gradually. Use a wire whisk.

  2. Step 2

    Strain any lumps out with a colander or kitchen strainer. The consistency should be creamy.

  3. Step 3

    Pour the paste into a plastic squeeze bottle.

  4. Step 4

    Let your batik project dry overnight before crackling.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can't dip material coated with paste resist into dye the way you can with wax. Paint or sponge the dye on instead.
  • This paste won't keep, so use it the same day it's made.

on 8/16/2009 We are going to try this next weekend and hope it is as simple as you make it sound. Is there any reason for not wetting the fabric after the wax has dried and before emersing it in dye?
