Troubleshooting Top Freezer Refrigerator Problems
Top freezer refrigerators have a freezer compartment located above the refrigerator compartment, a style that's available from many different manufacturers, including Maytag, General Electric and Whirlpool. These models typically do not have a water or ice dispenser but offer standard refrigerator options, including adjustable shelves, bins and humidity controlled containers. If issues occur with the refrigerator, perform some troubleshooting steps prior to contacting a service technician for assistance. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Ensure that the refrigerator is connected to a grounded three-prong outlet if the unit has no power. Replace the fuse or reset the circuit breaker if necessary. Do not plug the refrigerator into an extension cord, as this cannot supply enough power for the refrigerator.
-
2
Move items inside the refrigerator and push shelves and bins in completely if the refrigerator door or freezer door won't close. Wipe down the seal on the door if dirt or debris is preventing the door from closing, or is difficult to open.
-
-
3
Adjust the thermostat to a lower setting and wait several hours if the temperature is too warm. Keep the doors closed as much as possible.
-
4
Turn the water valve on fully and straighten out any kinks in the water line if the ice cubes in the ice maker are small or hollow. Discard the first few batches of ice after the refrigerator is first installed.
-
5
Adjust the thermostat to a warmer setting if ice or frost develops on the exterior of food packages. Keep the doors shut as much as possible.
-
6
Adjust the ice cubes in the bin if they are piled up and the ice maker has shut off. Remove ice cubes if they're stuck in the ice maker with a plastic utensil.
-
7
Clean the inside of the unit with a baking soda and water mixture if the refrigerator smells bad or the ice smells bad. Cover food before placing it inside the unit.
-
8
Move items away from the vents if food is freezing in the refrigerator compartment and turn up the temperature slightly.
