How to Handle a Stuck Throttle While Riding a Motorcycle

You'll have to act quickly to avoid an accident if the throttle gets stuck when you're making a turn or slowing for traffic ahead.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Twist the throttle back and forth several times. This will free a stuck throttle cable if that's what's causing the problem.

  2. Step 2

Try again to close the throttle.

  3. Step 3

Activate the engine cut-off switch immediately, while pulling in the clutch, if the throttle remains stuck. Note that although this maneuver will stop power to the rear wheel, the roar of the engine may not immediately stop.

  4. Step 4

Pull off the road and come to a halt when you have the motorcycle under control. Check the throttle cable carefully for the source of trouble.

  5. Step 5

Call for help on a pay phone or cellular phone, or ask someone you're riding with to call for help if you can't get the throttle to work properly.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make certain the throttle is working properly before continuing.
  • Motorcycling is an inherently dangerous activity that can result in serious injury or death. We recommend that you seek proper training and equipment before attempting this activity.
