How to Draw a Dream House

Many people dream of owning a home and many more want to design and draw their own dream home. Designing and drawing out your dream house plans lets you decide how large you want the rooms to be, how many rooms you want and what you want the house footprint to be. It also gives you the chance to personalize your dream house by adding features specifically for your family like an outdoor kitchen or an in-home theater.

Things You'll Need

  • Home design software
  • Graph or draft paper
  • Pencil
  • Ruler

On the Computer

  • Start with a basic or blank floor plan using a free design website. Small Blue Printer lets you choose from four sample plans or gives you the option to create your own footprint.

  • Place rooms on your footprint; move them around and resize them until you have the dimensions you want. Add bathrooms to each floor of your home; experiment with different shower, toilet and tub sizes. Place utility and mud rooms inside your dream home.

  • Add the kitchen and dining area to the house. Different programs allow you to see what several types of cabinets, faucets and counter tops look like in your dream kitchen.

  • Put extra details like fireplaces and custom lighting. Punch Software lets you add several personal details to your dream home.

  • Add additional space like an outdoor tool shed or an attached or detached garage.

  • Pick wall colors and flooring type, Tech Mixer lets you pick color palettes by personal preference.

  • Place furniture templates in your rooms and customize colors and preferences. Sweet Home 3-D gives you several templates to work with to help you create the home of your dreams.

  • Add outside details. Tech Mixer lets you landscape your outdoor areas to create the perfect landscape for your home.

  • Tour your dream house in 3-D. Make any changes and repeat steps one through five until you reach desired results.

  • Print your dream house floor plans.

By Hand

  • Use graph paper or draft paper for your design. Draw the footprint of your dream house using a pencil. A ruler helps make scaled measurements.

  • Make a scale or key so you know how large or small an area is. If you have a room that is 15-by-15 feet, make a scale to indicate window size. A quarter inch is equivalent to one square foot, for example.

  • Add rooms to your dream home. Ensure bedrooms, closets, storage, bathrooms, kitchen, laundry, living, family or a great room are on your footprint.

  • Put in any extra details like railings and fireplaces. Add outdoor items and landscaping. Incorporate any additional objects like a garage or tool shed.

  • Make any necessary or desired changes.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use graph paper first when drawing your dream house, when you have completed the basic design, switch to draft paper. Draft paper lets you incorporate different colors into your design and in various sizes. Many home design software programs print directly to blueprints. Obtain the driver of a printer found a blueprint copy shop, add the driver and print to file. Take the disk into the printers and have them print the blueprints. Some home design software will let you choose details like wood and brick for the exterior of your dream home.
