      Use the tape to measure the space behind the commode. Measure from the wall to the middle of the first bolt on the bottom of the commode. This is a common measurement for commode placement.

      Measure from the side edges of the flange bolts to the outer wall or next blocking area such as a vanity or sink.

      Get the entire length and width of the commode. Use the tape to find the measurements for the widest and longest parts.

      Find the rough-in dimension of the commode. This is the measurement from the back of the commode to the outlet hole on the underside of the bowl.
