Your vinyl convertible top can tear easily, allowing water to seep into the car.

The vinyl convertible top of your 1973 Eldorado protects you from sunlight and wind while you drive. Unfortunately, the vinyl can tear on this convertible top, causing a leak that may drip into the cab or trunk of your car. Repairing the vinyl damage is your only option other than replacing the entire top, which is expensive and time consuming. Gather your materials, and handle the vinyl repair job yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash off the vinyl surface on and around the ripped areas by scrubbing it with a soft sponge and a solution of water and mild soap. Dry the areas with a soft cloth.

    • 2

Cut off any loose strings and vinyl fringes from around the torn areas with scissors.

    • 3

Measure the size of the tear with a measuring tape to determine the size of vinyl patch to use. Remember to cut the patch so it measures at least 2 inches wider and longer than the size of the damage.

    • 4

Apply vinyl adhesive in a small amount all around the tear with a paintbruch, then place the patch onto the glue. Check to ensure the tear is in the center of the patch so you can glue all the patch material properly to the existing vinyl top.

Allow 24 to 48 hours for the adhesive to dry before using the car and moving the convertible top.
