How to Repair a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu Power Window

Repairing the power window on your 2005 Chevrolet Malibu can refer to repairing the window itself or repairing the regulator that allows you to move the window up or down. Replacing either requires the removal of the interior door trim. When it comes to a broken window, the only thing you can really do is replace it. The same goes for the regulator motor. It should take you approximately one hour to replace the window or the motor on your Malibu.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench
  • 10 mm socket
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Slotted screwdriver

Removing Interior Door Trim

  • Turn off the engine of your Malibu. Raise the hood and prop it open. Disconnect the negative terminal from the battery, using the socket wrench,

  • Insert the slotted screwdriver under the door lock assembly and pop the assembly off the door. Use the slotted screwdriver to remove the four clips securing the door lock assembly. Detach the electrical connector of the assembly and remove it from the door.

  • Remove the two screws revealed by removing the door lock assembly and pull the door handle off the door. Remove the screws from the upper left and lower left corners of the door. Insert the slotted screwdriver between the door and the interior door trim. Pop the door trim off by working your way around the edge of the trim with the screwdriver.

  • Pull the door trim off the door, but do not remove it. Detach the electrical connector between the trim and the door. Pull the interior door trim out of the vehicle.

  • Peel off the plastic weather shield. From this point, you can replace either the window or the regulator.

Replacing the Window

  • Lower the window halfway to reveal the three securing bolts that prevent the window from falling. Remove the bolts. Carefully support the window as you remove the bolts to prevent it from falling to the ground.

  • Tilt the window down and pull up on it to remove it. Install the new window by sliding it onto the door.

  • Reinstall the bolts to secure the window to the door.

Replacing the Regulator

  • Remove the three bolts securing the motor. Disconnect the electrical connector from the motor.

  • Remove the five bolts securing the regulator itself. Remove the regulator and the motor from the door.

  • Install a new regulator and motor in the door and secure them by reinstalling the bolts.

Reassembling Interior Door Trim

  • Reattach the plastic weather shield by pushing it onto the door and snapping it into place.

  • Reattach the electrical connector to the door trim and the door. Reattach the interior door trim to the door and reattach the screws to secure the door trim.

  • Reattach the door lock assembly and the door handle. Reconnect the electrical connectors.

  • Reattach the negative terminal to the battery and close the hood.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be careful when working with the windows on your Malibu. They are very fragile and can break easily.
