How to Install Water Line Tile

Water line tiles go on the top part of swimming pool walls, so that the surface of the water meets the tiles. The water hides all the exposed swimming pool material so that you only see tiles and water from above the pool. Tiles make a swimming pool look more finished and keep it cleaner so it's easier to maintain. Without water line tiles, the top of the swimming pool is fully exposed to sunlight, leading to a faded appearance.

  • Apply silicone-based adhesive to the back of a tile, focusing on the center of the tile.

  • Place the tile against the top of the pool wall until it sticks. Only use tiles that are suitable for swimming pools. Paste a length of sticky tape onto the tile and the lip of the swimming pool to secure it in place until the silicone-based adhesive dries. Repeat until you cover the entire water line, and let the adhesive set for 24 hours.

  • Use a special applicator to apply silicone grout to the spaces between the tiles. The applicator has a tube at the end that releases the grout in a thin line. Run a finger along the grout lines to smooth out the surface. Repeat until you finish grouting all the tile joints.
