How to Make Roses From Feathers

How to Make Roses From Feathers thumbnail
You can use feather roses as an accessory on hair ties.

When you are making costumes for a theatrical play or for a class presentation, you can make the outfits look authentic by adding on detailed accessories. For example, you can add roses onto the edging of Victorian costumes to make them look more period-accurate. Instead of using real roses, you can make faux roses out of feathers. Once the feather roses are finished, they will look realistic and will be indistinguishable from real roses.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the quill ends off of 20 red feathers. You will use the remaining upper portion of the feathers to make the rose.

    • 2

Cover about 2 inches of the end of a green chenille stick, or pipe cleaner, with craft glue.

    • 3

Wrap one of the feathers tightly around the glued end of the chenille stick with the tip of the feather facing up. This will be the first petal of the rose.

    • 4

Apply craft glue around the bottom third of the wrapped feather. This will leave the tip of the feather natural, and the bottom of the feather coated with glue.

    • 5

Wrap a second feather around the stick, as before, adhering the feather to the glue. This second feather, which will become the second petal of the rose, should be wrapped slightly loose around the first.

    • 6

Apply craft glue around the bottom third of the second feather petal, as before.

    • 7

Wrap a third feather around the second feather, wrapping the feather even more loosely than before. Place the third feather so that the tip is off center, which will make the feather rose resemble the staggered appearance of a real rose.

    • 8

Continue gluing and wrapping the red feathers around the form, staggering them around the other feathers as you work. Each time you add on another feather, wrap it more loosely than before. Let the glue dry before displaying the feather rose.
