My GE Oven Will Not Bake

If your GE oven refuses to bake or even turn on, you might be tempted to call for repairs or replace your uncooperative oven. However, GE advises consumers to try to diagnose the problem themselves before paying for a service call. Although the problem might be a broken heating element or another part that needs to be replaced, it could also be something simple that you can easily fix yourself in minutes.

  • Check your home's fuses or circuit breakers if the oven will not turn on at all. You may need to replace a fuse or reset a breaker to restore electricity to your GE oven.

  • Check the oven's control panel to make sure that you set it properly. You must press the "Bake" button, set the baking temperature using the numerical buttons and then press the "Start" button. If you do not complete these three steps, the oven will not bake.

  • Open the oven, and make sure that the oven racks are correctly installed. These racks should be level unless you are using the extension racks available with some GE ovens. When the racks are correctly installed, you can shut the oven door completely with no resistance.

  • Adjust the thermostat on your oven if you still experience baking problems. Press and hold down the "Bake" and "Broil" buttons at the same time until "SF" flashes on the display. Press the bake button to choose to increase or decrease the oven temperature, and then enter the desired temperature difference on the numerical pad. Press the "Start" button to save your settings.
