How to Remove an Audi Fuel Pump

A subsidiary of Volkswagen (VW), German car manufacturer Audi offers a range of cars, from the super-mini to SUV crossovers. One of Audi's best-selling models is the A4 sedan, due to it attractive appearance, high-end specifications and practicality for families. One major problem any car can have is the fuel pump failing due to dirt or rust getting past the inlet filters. Fuel pump replacement is typically a costly repair, but you can do it yourself with a little bit of effort and patience.

Things You'll Need

  • Pliers
  • Socket wrench
  • Dry rag
  • 1/4-inch ratchet
  • Spanner wrench
  • Remove the fuel filler cap, start the car and leave it running until the fuel tank is completely empty. The engine will cut off once the fuel has run out. Turn off the ignition

  • Use the pliers to disconnect the negative battery cable. Before disconnecting the battery, ensure you have the correct security code for the car radio, as all systems will be reset once the battery is disconnected.

  • Open the trunk and remove the trunk flooring cover. Locate the fuel tank behind the rear passenger seat. Remove the cover.

  • Lift the cover. Using the 1/4-inch ratchet and socket wrench remove the nut. With the nut removed, you will gain access to the fuel pump.

  • Disconnect the harness connector, fuel supply, return hose from the flange and remove the electrical connectors. Use an old rag to catch any excess fuel from the fuel lines.

  • Turn the fuel pump counter-clockwise until it unlocks and can be removed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be extremely careful when working with fuel tanks and fuel lines as gasoline is very volatile and could ignite from any small spark. Make sure to disconnect the negative battery cable prior to beginning the project.
