How to Clean Black Mold on Air Conditioner Vents

Black mold can be dangerous to your health if it is not properly and immediately cleaned. Areas of high moisture are susceptible to black mold growth. For this very reason, air conditioners are often prone to developing mold. Black mold that gets into the air and into your system can cause respiratory problems as well as nausea. To clean mold from air conditioner vents, wear proper protective gear including eye goggles, a dust mask and rubber gloves.

Things You'll Need

  • Eye goggles
  • Dust mask
  • Rubber gloves
  • Spray bottle
  • Paper towels
  • Bleach
  • Plastic bags
  • Mist the vents lightly with water using a spray bottle. If the mold is too dry, it has a better chance of becoming airborne when being cleaned.

  • Wipe down each blade of the vent using a paper towel. Black mold can be microscopic. Wipe down areas that do not appear to contain mold as well.

  • Mix one part water with one part bleach in a spray bottle. Spray down the vent to disinfect and prevent additional mold from developing. Allow the bleach to remain on the vent surface for three to five minutes.

  • Dry the vent thoroughly using a paper towel to remove any remaining moisture.

  • Discard all paper towels, rubber gloves and mold-infested materials into plastic bags and take outside for pickup. Any mold left in the house has the chance of contaminating and spreading to other areas.
