How to Make Felt Pirate Hats

How to Make Felt Pirate Hats thumbnail
Felt pirate hats are fun and easy to make.

Pirate hats are an absolute must for your child's pirate themed party. You can buy some cheap looking pirate hats at a nearby party store, or you can make them out of newspaper, but children play rough at parties and almost always want the theme of the party to continue long after the party is over. Making felt pirate hats for everyone may take a little more time, but the end product is sturdy and more realistic than the other ways.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a template by drawing or tracing the shape of a pirate hat on a piece of black felt. You will want to purchase the felt by the yard as the craft pieces will not be quite large enough. Make your hat approximately 10 inches high and 19 inches wide. Cut out the template.

    • 2

Fold the felt in half so you can make to hat pieces at one time.

    • 3

Lay the template on the felt. Pin it in place to keep the template stable.

    • 4

Cut carefully around the template. You don't want the fabric layers to move around or your felt may be cut unevenly.

    • 5

Remove the template and re-pin the felt pieces together around the top and the sides.

    • 6

Sew along the edges, about 1/4 inch in from the edge of the felt. Do not sew the bottom of the felt together. This will be the opening to place on the child's head. Remove the pins.

    • 7

Turn the felt pieces right-side out. To make sure the corner pieces are pushed out, use a pen, crochet hook or other slim instrument to poke the corners.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can add details to the hat for a little more character. A skull and crossbones is a popular design for pirate hats.
