How to Remove Paint From a Gel Coat

Removing oxidized paint from gel coat is needed for boats with fiberglass hulls with a painted name or graphics. If you no longer want to have the graphics or name on the boat, they need to be removed. To do this, the paint needs to be taken off without damaging the gel coat, which is covering the fiberglass. This process requires using a product that is designed for use with fiberglass gel coat.

Instructions

    • 1

Mix a small amount of the caustic soda detergent and citrus degreaser with warm water from the garden hose in a 5-gallon bucket.

    • 2

Dip a wash glove into the solution and wipe it over the surface of the boat where you need to remove the paint. Lightly scrub the area with a soft-bristled brush. This will remove grease and grime on the surface of the fiberglass.

    • 3

Apply marine paint remover over the fiberglass with the paint brush. Go over the fiberglass with two to three strokes of the paint remover. Allow the paint remover to set for at least 30 minutes.

    • 4

Rub the paint with a rag. If the paint begins to come off, the paint remover has done its work. Continue rubbing in a circular motion to remove the paint.

    • 5

Apply more paint remover, if necessary, for stubborn spots. Continue rubbing the fiberglass until all of the paint has been removed.

    • 6

Rinse the fiberglass with warm water from the garden hose.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never use bleach to remove paint or stains from fiberglass as it will damage the gel coat.
