Gray mold is one of the most common colors of household mold and is typical of several mold varieties. It can be cleaned from most surfaces easily as long as the surface isn't too big. Kill and eliminate mold in your home if the mold covers surfaces smaller than 2 square feet. For larger areas, call a professional. Keep the environment dry to prevent further mold growth.
Things You'll Need
- Laundry detergent
- Unscented detergent
- Scrub brush
- Vacuum with HEPA filter
Put any washable items in the washing machine. This can include linens, clothes, cushion covers and drapes. Wash them on the hottest cycle they can tolerate with your usual detergent and dry as usual. Keep the clean fabrics sealed and away from the mold until the problem has been eliminated in the rest of the house.
Mix 1 tbsp. unscented detergent with 1 gallon of hot water and scrub down all washable surfaces. This includes walls, countertops, windows and large appliances. Scrubbing will remove the mold. Follow with a disinfectant such as bleach.
Vacuum porous, dry surfaces with a vacuum that has a HEPA filter attached. The HEPA filter will catch mold spores and prevent them from returning to the air. These surfaces include upholstery, carpet, wood and drywall.
