How to Put Bigger Tires on a 5 x 8 Trailer

Many utility trailers come with small tires. This can be a bit of an issue for trailer height. If your trailer has small tires and you want to beef it up a bit, you can find and install a larger tire. Installing larger tires on your trailer is really just a matter of finding the right wheel and tire combination that works on the trailer.

Things You'll Need

  • Wood block
  • Jack
  • Jack stand
  • Lug wrench
  • Ruler
  • Block the opposite tire to the one you are working on first.

  • Slide the jack under the frame of the trailer to jack it up. Push the jack stand under the axle area of the trailer for extra safety.

  • Slip the lug wrench over the lug nuts and turn them to the left to remove the lug nuts from the wheel. Remove the wheel and tire from the trailer.

  • Measure the distance between the lug nut holes and measure the center hole diameter. Write down the measurements.

  • Take the measurements and the trailer tire to the automotive wrecking yard and locate a larger tire and wheel with the same measurements. Make sure that the tires are in good shape.

  • Install the tire and wheel on the trailer in the reverse of removal and repeat for the other side.
