Many utility trailers come with small tires. This can be a bit of an issue for trailer height. If your trailer has small tires and you want to beef it up a bit, you can find and install a larger tire. Installing larger tires on your trailer is really just a matter of finding the right wheel and tire combination that works on the trailer.
Things You'll Need
- Wood block
- Jack stand
- Lug wrench
Block the opposite tire to the one you are working on first.
Slide the jack under the frame of the trailer to jack it up. Push the jack stand under the axle area of the trailer for extra safety.
Slip the lug wrench over the lug nuts and turn them to the left to remove the lug nuts from the wheel. Remove the wheel and tire from the trailer.
Measure the distance between the lug nut holes and measure the center hole diameter. Write down the measurements.
Take the measurements and the trailer tire to the automotive wrecking yard and locate a larger tire and wheel with the same measurements. Make sure that the tires are in good shape.
Install the tire and wheel on the trailer in the reverse of removal and repeat for the other side.
