The ballerina's tutu is an iconic element of the art of ballet. These ethereal skirts follow the intricate footwork of the dancer across the stage. Creating a tulle tutu for a ballet dancer of any age or size is not difficult, since the tulle fabric features edging that does not ravel to eliminate hems. This mostly no-sew tutu is composed of hand-tied strips of tulle attached to an elastic waistband, and requires just a few hand stitches for finishing.
Things You'll Need
- Tape measure
- 4 yards tulle fabric
- 1 yard 3/4-inch wide elastic ribbon
- White thread
Measure the waist of the dancer and subtract 1 inch. Cut the elastic to the measurement and hand sew the ends together to form a circle.
Measure from the dancer's waist to the knee for the tutu length.
Cut 50 2 inch wide strips of tulle to twice the length measurement.
Slip the elastic circle over your leg and bring it to your knee to make tying the tulle strips to the elastic easier.
Fold the tulle strips in half and tie all the strips to the elastic, pulling the knot to the bottom edge of the elastic circle.
