How to Tune Up a 1993 Toyota Corolla
The 1993 Toyota Corolla is a four-cylinder engine that should be tuned up every 30,000 miles or three years, whichever comes first. The Corolla is fuel-injected, so the tuneup does not consist of any adjustments. Recommended tuneups include replacing the spark plugs, cap, rotor and wires, topping up all fluids and inspecting accessory drive belts.

1
Mark the spark plug wires with a liquid eraser. Mark the coil towers with the same number. Match-mark the distributor cap and the distributor base, so you know which position to put the cap on. Open the boxes of parts. Line the wires up on the front of the vehicle. Screw the washer onto the spark plugs, if the brand you purchased comes with a washer.
-
2
Remove the plug wire on one of the cylinders. Remove the spark plug, using the spark plug socket. Screw in the new spark plug firmly, but do not over-tighten to avoid cracking the ceramic.

3
Follow the wire up to the distributor, and pull the wire off the distributor tower. Match the wire for length with one of the new wires. Press the wire onto the spark plug, then route it up to the distributor. Press the wire onto the distributor tower. You should hear or feel the wires snap into place. Mark the wire with the same markings as the old wire. Repeat the process for the other three plugs and wires.
-
4
Remove the coil wire from the center tower on the distributor cap and the coil. Press the coil wire onto the coil. You should hear or feel it snap into place.
-
5
Hold the new cap up to the old cap. Mark the new distributor in the exact places you marked the old distributor – both the match-mark and the numbers for the wires. Pull the first wire off the old distributor and press it onto the properly marked wire tower. Repeat for the rest of the wires.
-
6
Remove the old distributor cap, using the appropriate socket. Put a dot in the center of the metal piece at the end of the arm on the rotor. Put a dot on the base of the distributor directly below the dot on the rotor. Put a mark on the tip of the new rotor. Remove the old rotor, using the appropriate socket.
-
7
Slide the new rotor onto the distributor, making sure the dots line up. Tighten the bolt firmly. Fit the distributor cap onto the distributor, lining up the match-mark. Tighten the bolts, using the appropriate socket. Press the coil wire onto the center coil of the distributor cap until it snaps into place.

Check all the fluids – power steering fluid, brake fluid, transmission fluid, oil, coolant and windshield washer fluid. Top them off as needed. Check for leaks on each accessory. Check the accessory belts for dry rot or cracks. Replace as needed.
