How to Make a Jeannie Costume

Save

A genie costume is a whimsical and fun option for any dress-up party or event. Make one modeled after Jeannie, a female genie from the 1960's television show "I Dream of Jeannie." Although you can buy these costumes, it is easy and economical to make your own. And unlike many outfits, this one doesn't even require any sewing. A little shopping, a little gluing and a little accessorizing, and you have the costume you wished for. Then it's up to you to grant other people's wishes.

Things You'll Need

  • Satin pajama or harem pants
  • Bra or belly-bearing shirt in a coordinating color
  • 1 yard gauze
  • Fabric glue
  • Gemstones
  • Accessories
  • Find satin pajama or harem pants. Pick a color you like since you will use the same or coordinating colors for the bra and gauze.

  • Wear a shiny bra or belly-bearing shirt that is the same color as the pants. Or choose a coordinating color theme, like red with pink.

  • Wrap the piece of gauze around your head. Start by putting the center of it on your head with both sides hanging down in front of your shoulders. Then toss one side over the opposite shoulder, so the back of your head is covered.

  • Add gemstones by placing them in a line along the top of your pants and the bottom of your top with fabric glue. If you want, add them to the straps of your top, or make designs on your pants.

  • Accessorize with jewelry and a genie bottle. Buy the jewelry at a costume or thrift store. Bangles are often associated with genies, as are long necklaces and earrings. Look for genie bottles at costume stores. In a pinch, a perfume bottle will do.
