How to Make Hot Pink Cupcake Icing

Many people think that food coloring only comes in the basic four colors of red, blue, green and yellow. However, you can purchase gel-based neon colors in most craft stores, grocery stores or even online. Gel food coloring works the same as regular food coloring. The trick to making the color vibrant is to use the proper amount and to mix it thoroughly before adding any more. If you are going to be coloring your icing, it's best to make some that is white to make a good pre-color base.

Things You'll Need

  • Confectioner's sugar
  • Light corn syrup
  • Room temperature butter
  • Vanilla extract
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Electric mixer
  • Hot pink food gel coloring
  • Add 2 1/2 cups of confectioner's sugar, 2 tbsp. of water and 1 tbsp. each of light corn syrup, room temperature butter and vanilla extract into a large mixing bowl.

  • Mix the ingredients in the bowl with an electric mixer until the mixture is creamy.

  • Add a dime sized dollop of hot pink food gel coloring. Blend with the mixer to reveal the final shade.

  • Add more coloring as necessary, using only a tiny bit at a time before using the mixer to incorporate the color throughout the icing.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your icing is too thick, add more water a teaspoon at a time until you have reached your preferred consistency.
