Remove an Inner Tie Rod From a '96 Honda

The steering rack on a 1996 Honda uses an inner tie rod and an outer tie rod. The outer tie rod end is used for toe adjustments, and the inner tie rod is used to connect the outer tie rod to the rack. This inner tie rod end can wear out from age; if it does, it must be removed and replaced entirely.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull up the parking brake handle in the center console of the Honda. Raise the front of the Honda up with a jack and put jack stands under the jack points on the sides of the car. Take off the wheels with the tire iron.

    • 2

Take off the cotter pin on the castle nut connecting the outer tie rod end to the knuckle, using needle-nose pliers. Unbolt the castle nut with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket, then install the tie rod end removal tool on the tie rod end and tighten it in place with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket until the tie rod pops out of the knuckle.

    • 3

Loosen the locking nut on the outer tie rod end with an open-end wrench. Remove the outer tie rod end with another open-end wrench.

    • 4

Take off the clamp on the inner tie rod boot using a pair of pliers, then slide the boot off the rack. Unbolt the inner tie rod end from the steering rack with a pair of open-end wrenches, then take the inner tie rod end away from the Honda.
