How to Install Foil-Backed Insulation Board

Carson Barrett

Insulation is important in construction because it helps keep buildings comfortable and more energy-efficient. Several types of insulation are available that are used in different circumstances. One such type is foil-backed insulation board. This type of insulation is often used on block walls as the walls are flat and it can be directly attached to the walls. Insulation board is safer and easier to handle than fiberglass or loose-fill insulation because the polystyrene or polyurethane that the boards are made of is more stable and sturdy than fiberglass.

Wearing a mask isn't necessary with insulation boards.
  1. Powerwash the walls. The cleaner they are, the better the adhesive will hold.

  2. Measure the boards to fit on the wall. If necessary, cut them with a utility knife.

  3. Apply Styrofoam adhesive to the non-foil side of the first board.

  4. Install the board by pressing it firmly against the wall in the bottom corner. When installing the board, position it vertically.

  5. Install boards along the bottom of the wall, using the same technique you used to install the first board.

  6. Measure and cut boards to fit the second row.

  7. Install the boards in the second row the same way you installed the boards in the first row but stagger the boards in the second row so the seams don't line up with the seams in the first row. Continue until the walls have been finished.

  8. Place installation tape over the joints between the different insulation boards.
