How to Wire Up a CD Player in a 1996 Ford

Owners of a 1996 Ford can choose from a wide variety of aftermarket CD players to have installed in their vehicle's stereo mount. Once you have chosen the stereo, you can easily remove the factory unit from vehicle's dashboard. Purchase the Ford DIN removal keys from the dealership or third-party car audio retail outlet. Remove the factory stereo and install the new CD player yourself to save time and the cost of labor.

Instructions

Raise the Ford's hood and loosen the bolt holding the negative battery cable clamp to the negative battery terminal with the 10 mm socket wrench. Remove the cable from the battery and place it away from the battery terminals for safety. Move to the inside of the vehicle.

Squeeze the Ford DIN removal keys to align the prongs with the holes on the sides of the factory stereo. Slide the tools into the holes until they lock into place.

Place your index fingers into the curved section of the tools and pull outward on them. Maintain the outward pull while pulling the stereo deck from the Ford's stereo dock. Disconnect the stereo wiring and unplug the antenna cable lead from the rear panel of the stereo deck.

    • 4

Plug the stereo wiring connectors into the wiring harness adapter leads.

    • 5

Insert the faceplate adapter or installation sleeve included with the new CD player into the stereo dock. Pull the stereo wiring and antenna cable from the back of the Ford's stereo dock to the front of the vehicle's dashboard.

    • 6

Plug the wiring harness adapter lead connectors into the outlets on the back side of the new CD player. Insert the antenna cable lead into the antenna input on the rear panel of the aftermarket CD player.

    • 7

Slide the CD player into the Ford's dashboard until it snaps into place within the faceplate adapter or installation sleeve. Return to the vehicle's battery.

    • 8

Place the negative battery cable clamp onto the negative battery terminal post. Tighten the cable's bolt with the wrench and close the Ford's hood.
