How to Remove the Tub Drain Strainer

Leaks around the tub floor can usually be attributed to a poor seal between the tub drain strainer and the bottom of the tub. Removing the tub drain strainer is necessary to apply a new seal or replace the strainer if it is damaged. The drain strainer screws into a shoe below the tub. The most difficult part of removing the drain strainer is breaking the seal completely. Although there are specialty tools available for removing the drain strainer, simple hand tools are usually all that is necessary. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the stopper from the bath tub drain. Removal depends on the type of stopper you have. Twist-and-turn stoppers require removal of the center stem knob--turn the screw in the center of the stopper, once you remove the knob, to release it from the drain. Pop-up stoppers require removal of the latch on the tub--remove the screws securing the latch to the tab and pull it away slowly, bringing the stopper linkage with it through the wall. Pull the stopper out of the drain.

Insert the handles of a pair of pliers into the tub drain strainer. The handles will fit in opposing holes created by the crosshairs of the strainer.

    • 3

Slide a screwdriver between the handles and under the jaws of the pliers. The screwdriver acts as a handle for turning.

    • 4

Place your hands on each end of the screwdriver and turn the strainer counterclockwise with the pliers. This takes some force due to the putty seal between the tub and the strainer. Continue turning until the tub drain strainer is out of the tub.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the cross hairs in the strainer are missing or broken, purchase or rent a drain key at a home-improvement store. Drain keys expand inside the walls of the drain strainer so you can turn it counterclockwise.
