1
Replace the cap on the caulk tube still in the gun. This will keep any residual caulk from leaking out, which makes removal messier and can cause a blockage in the gun. If the cap has been misplaced, insert a properly sized nail in the tube's tip. You can also cover the tube of caulk with plastic wrap and secure it at the tip with a rubber band.

2
Press the release at the gun's rear, and pull the plunger all the way back, keeping your finger on the release. On most models, the release lever is located just underneath the plunger and above the trigger. Some models don't have a release lever. They require that you turn the plunger before it can be pulled back, which releases notches or teeth attached to the plunger at the tube's base. Once you disengage the tube, you can easily lift it from the gun's barrel and throw it away or store it for future use.

Wipe down the gun's surface with a damp, soapy rag to remove any remaining caulk. If any caulk has dried to the gun's surface, use a wire brush to gently scrape it away to prevent future blockages. The gun is now ready to be stored or loaded and used again.

Tips & Warnings
These instructions work for most caulking guns. Check the manufacturer's instructions for detailed instructions and tips for general use.
If the caulking gun won't be used for awhile, remove the caulk tube. With time, caulk may ooze out and harden to the gun, making removal impossible and requiring you purchase a new caulking gun.
