My Refrigerator Is Running But Not Cooling

Ensure the temperature control knob is turned "On" if the refrigerator is not cooling as expected

Several different manufacturing companies produce refrigerators for residential and commercial use, such as Frigidaire, Kenmore, Whirlpool and Maytag. These refrigerators come in all shapes, sizes, colors and with a wide variety of options for storage, filtered water, ice dispensing, temperature controlled shelves and drawers and temperature sensors, among others. Refrigerators are fairly simple to operate and keep functioning, but if issues arise, some troubleshooting efforts may be necessary. One such problem is if the refrigerator is running but not cooling properly.

Things You'll Need

• Power supply
• Clean cloth(s)
• Water
• Towel(s)

Instructions

1. Ensure the thermostat is turned "On" and move the temperature knob, button or selector to a much lower temperature. Give the refrigerator several hours to change the temperature, and limit the number of times the door is opened.

2. Use a clean, damp cloth to wipe down the seal on the door and then dry with a towel. Debris or dirt may prevent the door from closing all the way, which results in ineffective cooling.

3. Move objects inside the refrigerator away from the vents and wipe the vents clean with a damp cloth to ensure proper air flow and function.

4. Turn off the refrigerator and unplug it from the power supply. Open the front access panel or the back access panel, depending upon the refrigerator, and use a clean, damp cloth clean the condenser coils. Wipe dry with a towel and close the access panel. Plug the refrigerator back into the power supply and turn it back on.

5. Contact a service professional if the problem continues.
