How to Replace the Stop Light in a 1999 Suburban

The stop light on the 1999 Chevrolet Suburban is one of the three lights on the tail light assembly. In order to replace the stop light, you have to access the tail light. The stop light, also referred to as the brake light, uses 3057-type bulbs. In order to replace the light, you will need to use a Phillips screwdriver and a clean cloth. Replacing the stop light should only take you about 10 minutes.

      Turn the Suburban's engine off and open the rear doors.

      Remove the two black plugs from the rear tail light assembly access holes. Insert a screwdriver into the holes and remove the two screws.

      Pull the assembly out of the vehicle. Remove the screw from the bottom bulb retainer and take the retainer off the assembly.

      Pull out the Suburban's stop light bulb and use a clean cloth to install the new 3057-type bulb into the retainer. Place the retainer back onto the assembly and reattach the retainer screw.

      Place the assembly back into the vehicle and reinstall the two securing screws. Reattach the two black plugs and close the rear doors.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not allow the bulbs to come into contact with your bare hands, as that may damage the bulb.
