Electrical outlets can be wired for 220 volts or 120 volts.

220 volt outlets are needed for various types of appliances and certain types of electrical equipment. If you no longer require a 220V outlet, you can convert it to a standard 120V outlet. This is done by wiring a new 120V outlet in the electrical box or junction box. However, you will need to install new three wire electrical cable, to run to the 120V outlet. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

      Turn off the breaker, for the 220-volt outlet, on the circuit panel.

      Go to the 200V outlet and remove the screw that is securing the outlet cover with the screwdriver.

      Remove the screws that are securing the outlet to the electrical box. Pull the outlet out of the electrical box. Loosen the screws securing the electrical wires to the outlet with the screwdriver. The wires can also be cut with the wire cutters.

      Pull the wiring for the 220V outlet out of the electrical box. Run the electrical wire or cable for the 120V outlet to the electrical box.

      Insert the wire into the box and cut one inch of insulation from each of the wires with the wire cutters.

      Loosen the screws on the 120V outlet with the screwdriver. Attach the black wire to the brass screw, the white wire to the silver screw and the copper wire to the green screw.

      Place the 120V outlet in the electrical box. Tighten the screws to secure the outlet to the box with the screwdriver.

      Turn on the breaker for the room at the circuit panel. Plug a light or other object into the outlet to see if it works.

      Secure the outlet cover to the outlet, if the outlet is working properly.

Tips & Warnings

  • Disconnect the wiring for the 220V outlet from the circuit panel or remove the entire breaker.

  • The wire for the 200V outlet is not compatible with the 120V outlet.
