How to Remove a 1990 Chevy 1500 Steering Column

The steering column in a 1990 Chevrolet 1500 connects the steering wheel to the steering linkage, which lets the driver make turns while driving. The steering column can wear down over time, and develop problems in the tilting mechanism or internal components. If this happens, you can either replace your steering column with a new one or rebuild your current one with aftermarket or factory components. In either case, you first have to remove the steering column from the vehicle.

Things You'll Need

• 1/2-inch ratchet and socket set
• 1/4-inch ratchet and socket set
• Open-end wrench set
• Flat-head screwdriver

Instructions

1. Pop the hood. Locate the steering linkage connection underneath the brake master cylinder. Unbolt the lock bolt holding the steering column to the steering linkage using an open-end wrench.

2. Sit in the driver's seat. Unbolt the trim panel below the steering column using the 1/4-inch ratchet and socket. Remove the transmission's shifter linkage connected on the passenger side of the column from the column using a flat-head screwdriver. Pull the linkage away from the column.

3. Unbolt the steering column from the dashboard using the 1/2-inch ratchet and socket. Lower the column down onto the seat and unplug the wiring to the column with your hands.

4. Pull off the rubber boot around the base of the steering column where the column meets the firewall. Slide the steering column out through the interior of the vehicle and then out of the cab.
