When storing foods in plastic, the plastic surface often absorbs the odor of the food and leaves the bowl or container smelling unpleasant. To remove the odor, you want to use mild deodorizing elements that remove it without causing damage to the plastic itself. This can be done with a few items that you probably already have on hand in your home.

Things You'll Need

  • Dish soap
  • Dish cloth
  • Baking soda
  • White vinegar
  • Paper towels
  • Water

Wash the plastic as you normally would with soapy water. Dry it with a paper towel.

Sprinkle a light coating of baking soda over the plastic and let it sit overnight. Discard the baking soda the following morning and rinse the container. Smell to see if the odor still lingers.

Soak a paper towel in white vinegar if the odor is still present and rub the paper towel all over the inside of the plastic container. Repeat as needed until all the odor is removed from the plastic.

Wipe down the plastic with a dish cloth or paper towel using water only, and dry with a clean paper towel.
