Retrieve trouble codes from your F-150.

You can retrieve the rear anti-lock brake system (RABS) trouble codes from your 1992 Ford F-150 from home using an OBD I scan tool. This tool can be purchased from most auto parts stores or from your dealership. The On-Board Diagnostics computer receives and stores RABS error or trouble codes sent to it from the anti-lock braking system. Sensors in the braking system detect malfunctions and send diagnostic trouble codes to the computer. The computer, in turn, illuminates the ABS light on your instrument cluster. You can read the codes with an OBD I scan tool so that you can troubleshoot the problem. You can also use the tool to reset the computer and turn off the ABS light after repairs have been made.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the OBD port on the driver's side dashboard near the steering column. Insert the scan tool into this port.

    • 2

Put the key into the ignition and turn it to the "ACC" position, but don't start the engine.

    • 3

Wait while the scan tool turns on automatically. Some scan tools need to be turned on manually.

    • 4

Select the "Read Codes" or similar type of command from the menu on the scan tool. Wait for the scan tool to communicate with the OBD computer. Write down the RABS codes it displays on a piece of paper.

    • 5

Look up the meaning of the RABS codes in the scan tool's booklet. Unplug the scan tool and have a mechanic repair the brakes based on the information received from the codes.
