How to Unlock a Doorknob Without a Key
If you notice some of the doors in your home have locks on them but no keyhole, you may end up scratching your head wondering how you would unlock these doorknobs in an emergency. There are two basic types of interior doors that do not use keys: the push-button type and the turn-button type. Both of these have a different method for undoing the locking mechanism so that you can open the door. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Pin, paperclip or other skinny, narrow device
- Small flat-head screwdriver

Push-Button Doorknobs

Locate an object that is small enough to fit inside the small hole of the doorknob. Some things that might work include a small pin, paperclip or even the ink tube in a ball point pen.

Insert the object into the hole of the doorknob.

Apply pressure until you hear a "pop" sound. The lock should now be disengaged and you can open the door.
Turn-Button Doorknob

Insert a small flat-head screwdriver into the slot on the doorknob.

Wiggle the screwdriver around inside the lock until you feel it resting in the inside slot.

Turn the screwdriver a quarter turn to the right. The lock will turn to its open position and you will be able to open the door.
