How to Replace the Light Switch on a 1990 Honda Accord

When the light switch on the 1990 Honda Accord no longer works, it can leave you in a real tough spot. You won't be able turn the headlights on and off. You also might not be able to use the turn signals. Over time, the repeated use of the switch can cause the internal components to wear out and fail. You can replace the switch yourself with a few simple hand tools.

Things You'll Need

• 10 mm wrench
• Phillips screwdriver
• Replacement light switch

Instructions

Light Switch Removal

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the screws that secure the lower dashboard cover under the steering wheel.

2. Remove the screws in the lower steering column covers. Gently pry the upper and lower covers apart.

3. Remove the two screws in the light switch. Slide the switch outward. Disconnect the electrical connector.

Light Switch Installation

1. Connect the electrical connector to the new switch. Slide the switch into the housing and tighten the screws.

2. Place the upper and lower covers on the steering column and ensure they snap together. Tighten the mounting screws.

3. Install the lower dashboard cover and tighten the screws. Connect the negative battery cable. Test that the switch is working properly.

Tips & Warnings

• The mounting screws on the light switch are very tight. Use the appropriate size screwdriver to avoid stripping the screws.
