How to Replace the Camshaft Sensor in a PT Cruiser
The PT Cruiser's camshaft sensor uses a three-wire connector. The orange wire is for the 5-volt supply to the sensor. The black wire is the ground for the sensor, and the tan wire with the yellow stripe is for the cam sensor signal. The cam sensor sends a signal to the computer, telling it when the engine is on top dead center. The computer uses this signal to make various adjustments to the engine timing, fuel injectors and spark timing.

Pull the clamps off the air cleaner lid, using your fingers, then remove the lid. Disconnect the inlet air temperature sensor and the makeup air hose by pulling out on the plastic tabs, located in the air cleaner. Disconnect the electrical connector from the camshaft position sensor, using your fingers to pull on the plastic tabs. The sensor is located near the rear of the engine -- look for the sensor with the three wires previously outlined.

Use the appropriate socket to remove the camshaft sensor's mounting screws, then remove the camshaft sensor from the vehicle. Loosen the screw attaching the target magnet to the rear of the camshaft. The magnet has dowels that fit into machined locating holes in the end of the cam.
