How to Burp a Cooling System in a Jeep Cherokee

Air inside the cooling system can cause your Jeep Cherokee to overheat. Overheating happens when air trapped in the cooling system gets stuck in the thermostat housing. This causes irregular heating and cooling cycles and puts your Jeep at risk for overheating. When you change your fluid, you must burp your Jeep's cooling system to expel all of the air out.

Things You'll Need

• Gallon of distilled water

Instructions

1. Remove the radiator cap located on the top of your Jeep's radiator. Press down on the cap and turn it counterclockwise.

2. Turn on the Cherokee and run the engine until the radiator fan turns on. When the fan turns on, it indicates the coolant has cycled through the system. As the coolant moves through the system, it will force the air to the least path of resistance, which is the hole in the radiator.

3. Stop the engine and top off the radiator with distilled water and then place the cap back on.
