How to Make a Princess Carriage

Princesses are popular with girls of all ages. Perhaps it's the idea of being royalty or the beautiful clothing. One object often associated with princesses is a carriage. You can design your own princess carriage as a toy or as a food item for a party.

Things You'll Need

  • Watermelon
  • Serrated knife
  • Metal spoon
  • Grapefruit
  • Grapes
  • Strawberries
  • Cardboard box
  • Utility knife
  • Tape
  • Paint
  • Paper plates
  • Paper brads

Instructions

  1. Watermelon Carriage

    • 1

Cut a small slice out of the rind of one of the long sides of your watermelon. Do not cut into the fruit of the melon, just through the rind. This will give your melon a flat place to rest to keep it from rolling around when you are working with it. This is now the bottom of your carriage.

    • 2

Cut through the top of the watermelon using a sharp, serrated knife. Cut at a 45 degree angle, creating a 4-inch hole. This is similar to how you could cut and remove the top of a pumpkin when decorating it. The 45 degree angle will give you a place to replace the top of the carriage.

    • 3

Use a metal spoon or scoop to remove the fruit from inside the watermelon. Or you can use a melon baller if you want uniform pieces of fruit. Set it aside.

    • 4

Cut a 2-by-3-inch rectangle in one of the long sides of the watermelon to make the door of carriage where the door would be located on a real carriage. Cut a 1-by-1-inch square on either side of the rectangle to make windows. Repeat this step on the other side of the watermelon to make a second door and set of windows.

    • 5

Cut four slices of grapefruit approximately 1/2-inch thick. Place the slices of grapefruit where the carriage wheels would be. Attach them by pressing a toothpick through them. Cut two grapes in half and press the cut ends of the grapes onto the toothpicks to cap off the grapefruit wheels.

    • 6

Fill the inside of the watermelon with your watermelon, grapes and cut strawberries. Only fill the watermelon to below the level of the windows and doors. Place the watermelon lid back on the hole in the top to finish your carriage.

    Play Carriage

Cut off the top of a cardboard box using a utility knife. Seal the bottom of the box with tape and decorate the outside of the box using paint. You can paint the box any color you want your princess carriage to be. You can also use stickers, glitter or stamps to add additional decorations. Allow all paint to dry.

    • 8

Use paint to decorate four paper plates to resemble wagon wheels. First paint the plates a base color; brown, for example. Draw a circle in the center of the plate approximately 1 inch in diameter using black paint. Then draw five spokes radiating out from the center circle and stopping 2 inches from the edge of the plate. Allow the plates to dry.

    • 9

Attach the wheels to the sides of the carriage where the wheels should be. Use paper brads to connect them by pressing the brads through the center of the plates and through the cardboard box. Then open up the brads to hold them in place. If necessary, make a pilot hole in the cardboard box using your utility knife.

    • 10

Cut a door into each side of the carriage using a utility knife. The first cut should be a vertical cut, 3 inches from the back edge of the box and extend down to 3 inches above the bottom of the box. Then cut horizontally to about 3 inches from the other side of the box. Bend back the cutout piece to crease it and then press it closed again.

Tips & Warnings

  • When choosing a cardboard box, choose one large enough for the intended princess and a friend to fit inside.
