How to Replace a Turning Signal Switch on a '97 Chevy Blazer
Replacing a turn signal switch on a 1997 Chevy Blazer might sound easy, but to complete the job you must pull the steering wheel off the steering column. This is necessary because there's a mechanism inside the steering column that turns the switch off after you complete your turn. This prevents the need to manually turn off the signal switch after you make your turn.

1
Disconnect the negative battery cable using a socket and ratchet to remove power to the horn.
-
2
Pull the horn cover off the center of the steering wheel with your hand.
-
-
3
Remove the two screws that hold the horn mechanism to the steering column. Lift the horn up, unplug the wiring harness connected to the horn and place the horn off to the side.
-
4
Remove the center lock nut from the steering column using a socket and ratchet.
-
5
Pull the steering wheel off the column using a steering wheel puller. You can rent a steering wheel puller from most auto parts stores.
-
6
Remove the snap rings that secure the center plate to the column using a pair of snap-ring pliers. Pull the center plate off the column.
-
7
Locate the turn signal switch inside the column. Use the replacement switch as a visual aid.
-
8
Disconnect the wiring harness that connects to the switch.
-
9
Remove the three screws that hold the switch to the column, using a screwdriver. Discard the switch.
-
10
Secure the new switch to the column using the three screws and a screwdriver.
-
11
Plug the wiring harness into the new switch.
-
12
Place the center ring over the switch and reinstall the snap rings using the snap-ring pliers.
