How to Troubleshoot a Reel-to-Reel Tape Recorder
A reel-to-reel tape recorder uses analog tape threaded between two open plastic or metal reels for recording and reproducing sound. Because the recording and tape heads are exposed on the front of the component, reel-to-reel decks are more susceptible to wear and malfunctions caused by dust and dirt. Try troubleshooting the tape deck before taking it to a repair shop or tossing it away. A few simple checks could get the unit working again.
Instructions

1
Load a reel of tape on the left spindle of the deck and an empty take-up reel on the right, threading the tape through the tape heads, over the tension pulley and onto the take-up reel.
-
2
Press the "Play" button. Turn the dial knob to "Play" if the unit uses dial controls. Verify that the take-up reel rotates counter-clockwise to advance tape onto the reel. Turn the dial knob or press the "FF" or "Fast-Forward" button to confirm the motor is working for the fast-forward control.

3
Set the deck to "Rewind" to verify the reverse motor is working. Both reels spin clockwise as the tape moves from right to left. If neither reel rotates on the "Rewind" or "FF" setting, the rubber drive belt inside the tape deck may be broken. Contact the manufacturer or a repair center with your model number to order a replacement belt

4
Push the four audio plugs firmly into the jacks on the back of the tape deck and verify the four plugs on the other end, connected to an amplifier or receiver, are securely attached.
-
5
Remove the two reels containing tape from the deck.
-
6
Turn on the power switch for the demagnetizer and pass it over the tape heads to remove any magnetic charge that can interfere with recording and playback.
-
7
Dip a cotton swab in rubbing alcohol and clean the groove in-between the tape heads, located between and below the two reels (see Tips).

Tips & Warnings
Step 7: The alcohol is a mild solvent for removing dust and dirt that can clog the heads and inhibit their ability to read the analog signal on the tape. Let the alcohol evaporate completely, waiting about 10 minutes before loading a tape on the machine.
