How to Add an AUX Line to a Ford Taurus
The stock stereo system in the Ford Taurus does not allow owners to connect external devices through the front interface of the head unit. You can replace your factory stereo deck with an aftermarket unit or add an AUX line for optional device connection. Use an FM modulator to provide a link from your device to the stock head unit. You can install the FM modulator yourself in under 30 minutes, using a few basic tools.
Things You'll Need
- Adjustable wrench
- Ford DIN removal tools or keys
- Wiring harness adapter
- FM modulator

1
Park the Taurus and turn the engine off. Pull the hood release lever under the dashboard on the driver's side and move to the front of the car. Lift the hood. Remove the rubber covering from the negative battery terminal. Loosen the bolt on the cable's clamp with the wrench and remove the negative battery cable from the negative battery terminal. Return to the Ford's interior.

2
Insert the prongs of the Ford DIN removal keys into the opening near the sides of the factory head unit. Place your fingers in the curved ends of the keys protruding from the head unit. Pull out on the keys to remove the stereo deck from the dashboard.

3
Detach the two stereo wiring connectors from the outlets on the rear panel of the factory head unit. Plug the wiring connectors into the wiring harness adapter leads. The connections can only be made one way. Check the wiring harness adapter manual for diagrams illustrating connection points for the stereo wiring and AUX line.

4
Plug the wiring harness adapter lead connectors into the outlets on the back side of the stereo deck where the factory wiring connectors were attached.
-
5
Connect the FM modulator connectors to the appropriate wiring harness adapter leads.
-
6
Place the FM modulator into the back of the Ford's stereo deck. There will be ample space to stow the device while the stereo is in place. Route the auxiliary line from the FM modulator into the glove box next to the stereo assembly dock. The line will serve as the connection point for future aftermarket external devices.
-
7
Slide the factory stereo unit back into the mounting dock until it snaps into place. Return to the engine compartment.
-
8
Reattach the negative battery cable to the negative battery terminal. Tighten the cable to the terminal post with the wrench. Replace the black rubber covering over the terminal and close the hood.
