How to Secure an Object to a Roof Rack

Some vehicles come with pre-installed roof racks.

Installing a roof rack on your car can save you hundreds of dollars on moving costs over the lifetime of your vehicle. Rather than plunking down for a rental moving truck or van, simply strap down that canoe or love seat. As long as you secure it properly, you should be able to transport just about anything short of a Steinway on your roof rack.

Instructions

1. Configure and position the items you will be transporting on the roof rack so that they fit on top of your roof. Adjust the crossbars if necessary.

2. Set down the largest and heaviest items first, then layer the smaller items. Secure each item separately with a set of bungee cords, latching the hooks under the bars.

3. Stretch several rack ties over the pile, fastening them on both sides. The rack ties should form a criss-crossing pattern on top of the pile.

4. Double check to make sure that the items are secure before you hit the road.
