Instructions on How to Thread a Bobbin of a Singer 5040
Threading a bobbin is the first step to using a Singer 5040 sewing machine. The bobbin is the cylindrical case that you thread before inserting it below the sewing machine's faceplate. It provides the second set of thread for the machine to use in sewing. You thread the bobbin before threading the machine. Threading the bobbin is also called winding the bobbin. The Singer 5040 uses only bobbins designated specifically for this machine.
Instructions

Preparing the Machine
-
1
Push the needle stop indention on the hand wheel located on the opposite side of the machine from the needle mechanism.
-
2
Place the spool of thread on the spool pin located on the top of the machine on the same side as the hand wheel.
-
-
3
Place the spool cap over the edge rim of the spool of thread to keep the thread from tangling.
-
4
Pull a small amount of thread from the spool and insert the thread into the thread guidepost on top of the machine.
-
5
Wind the thread in a clockwise direction around the front of the bobbin winder tension disk located on the top of the machine close to the needle mechanism.
Threading the Bobbin
-
6
Clasp the bobbin in one hand and insert the thread from the inside through one of the small holes on the edge of the bobbin.
-
7
Place the threaded bobbin on top of the bobbin spool on the top of the machine near the hand wheel. Push the bobbin spindle toward the hand wheel.
-
8
Holding onto the thread, step on the foot pedal to begin loading the bobbin. Release the foot pedal when the desired amount of thread is loaded on the bobbin, or wait for the winding to stop automatically when the bobbin is full.
-
9
Cut thread from the top of the bobbin and from the spool feeding the bobbin. Remove the bobbin from the bobbin spindle.
-
10
Push the opposite side of the hand wheel from the needle stop indention to return the hand wheel to the sewing position.

Tips & Warnings
Do not release the thread when the bobbin is winding. Releasing the hold on the thread during winding can cause the bobbin tension to be too loose or create tangles within the bobbin thread.
