How to Rotate Tires on an RV Trailer

How to Rotate Tires on an RV Trailer thumbnail
You should rotate the tires on your RV trailer to extend their life.

The tires on your RV trailer wear down as the trailer is used. However, proper maintenance of your RV trailer's tires can prolong your tires' usage. An example of tire maintenance is rotating the tires. RV trailer manufacturer Airstream and tire manufacturer Michelin recommend you rotate tires every 10,000 miles. Rotating tires prevents unnecessary wear on the tire, such as feathering, that can shorten the tire's useful life.

Instructions

    • 1

Park your RV trailer on level ground. Place the wheel locking chocks on the wheels of the trailer to ensure it does not move.

    • 2

Place one RV jack under the RV frame behind the right front wheel. Place another RV jack under the RV frame behind the rear rear wheel. Ensure the jacks will lift the trailer on the trailer's frame and will lift only one side of the trailer.

    • 3

Raise the jacks so they are touching the trailer's frame, but not lifting the trailer. Raise the jack at the front wheel with three pumps of the jack to begin lifting the trailer. Raise the jack at the trailer's rear wheel with three pumps of the jack. Continue alternately raising the jacks with three pumps each until the trailer's wheels are lifted high enough from the ground to turn freely.

    • 4

Fit the tire wrench on one of the lug nuts of the front tire. Turn the tire wrench counterclockwise to remove the lug nut. Repeat this procedure to remove all lug nuts from the front wheel. Set the lug nuts aside. Remove the front wheel, and set it aside.

    • 5

Repeat step 3 to remove the rear wheel.

    • 6

Mount the rear wheel to the front wheel's axle. Place the front wheel's lug nuts on that wheel, and tighten the lug nuts by turning them clockwise with the tire wrench.

    • 7

Mount the front wheel to the rear wheel's axle. Tighten the lug nuts on that wheel by turning them clockwise with the tire wrench.

    • 8

Slowly lower the trailer to the ground by alternately releasing the pressure on the two RV jacks.

    • 9

Repeat steps 2 through 8 on the left side of the trailer to rotate those two tires.
