How to Attach Fabric to Styrofoam

It's easy to create craft projects by attaching fabric to Styrofoam.

Crafters can create many charming projects using fabric and Styrofoam. The combination works exceptionally well for wreathes and ornaments. When deciding how to attach fabric to Styrofoam, remember that Styrofoam is plastic and all plastics are non-porous. Therefore, if you use an adhesive to attach the fabric, make sure it is suitable for use with non-porous materials.

Things You'll Need

• Push pins
• Knitting needle
• Hot glue gun
• Hot glue sticks

Instructions

1. Insert push pins through the fabric and into the Styrofoam. If you do not want the pins to be noticeable, use pins that coordinate with your fabric. If you are covering a wreath, place the pins in the back of the wreath where they are not visible.

2. Cut a small piece of fabric and place it on top of the Styrofoam. Place a knitting needle in the center of the fabric and push, creating a small hole in the Styrofoam. The fabric will remain in the hole. Repeat several times for a cheerful display of fabrics. Cover a Styrofoam ball using this method to create an adorable Christmas ornament.

3. Spread a thin layer of hot glue on the fabric. Allow the hot glue to cool for four or five seconds and then place it on the Styrofoam. The thinner the layer of hot glue, the less likely you are to see it through the fabric.

Tips & Warnings

• Do not use adhesives that contain solvents on Styrofoam. The solvent will break down the Styrofoam, causing it to release toxins.
